Part 3 chapter 3

Power. Power is everything to the party; it's what the party strives to survive on. Without power, the party would not exist. O'Brien describes to Winston that the party eliminates love, compassion, and any other feelings of friendship towards other humans. The only thing you can love and adore is the party- BB. I agree with Winston about his argument that the party cannot destroy affection- it is a trait that is engraved in human nature. There is no destroying love, only altering it. I don't think a society can live on the traits of fear and hatred because the society would be dangerous and insane . People wouldn't have any emotions, it just seems surreal, an idea that is unimaginable to me, because I have never experience such life. Winston is a true human in the book, O'Brien is an obsessed lunatic, an intelligent one at that.

  1. Look at you blogging on the bus! Power is the thing, that is certain, but like I have written on several other blogs of classmates, this doesn't make sense because you are using logic in an illogical system. Think about it--if you are the ONLY one who knows something or believes something, how long would it take before you gave in to the majority? I think it would take less than you think it would. The party works because it says so. There are no other options. And those who are a threat are systematically destroyed in the most effective manner possible. It works much the same way a child is "taught" by a parent or teacher or religious leader.
